Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of all construction activities in the Makoko and Shogunle areas, pending the completion of reconciliation talks with affected residents within a two-week window.

The lawmakers also endorsed a proposal submitted by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on E-GIS, Dr Olajide Babatunde, which prescribes a 250-metre setback from the Third Mainland Bridge, as well as an extra 250-metre buffer beyond the power line corridor.

Under the directive, all forms of development within the affected zones were prohibited.

Addressing representatives of the Makoko and Shogunle communities during a committee engagement, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, who was represented by the Majority Leader, Mr Noheem Adams, explained that the Assembly, working with the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the E-GIS Office, had instructed each community to set up a 10-member committee.

According to Adams, the committees are expected to be representative, incorporating women, youths, students and traditional leaders, to ensure that the concerns of residents are properly addressed and a durable resolution achieved. He stressed the need for unity and cooperation among all stakeholders.

He further disclosed that the State Executive Council was in the final stages of concluding compensation plans for those affected, even as consultations with community members continue.

In his reaction after the meeting, the Chairman of the Yaba Local Council Development Area, Mr Bayo Adefuye, welcomed the decisions reached, noting that relief items and other palliatives were already being distributed by both the state and local governments.

Adefuye expressed optimism that the Assembly committee would complete its work within the proposed two-week timeframe.

He also appealed to residents to comply fully with the directives and cautioned community leaders against actions driven by personal interests that could threaten peace and derail the resolution process.
