Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has announced plans to institute legal action at the Federal High Court, citing what he described as persistent missteps by Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State and the alleged suffering inflicted on him and other residents of the Amasiri community.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Idam said he had previously written extensively, spoken out repeatedly, and exercised patience in the hope that the governor would reconsider actions he believes have adversely affected him and “a class of innocent citizens in and from Amasiri.”
He said those efforts, however, yielded no positive response.
Idam stated that he is approaching the court in his personal capacity to seek constitutional reliefs.
He emphasized that while the suit is being filed individually, the remedies sought are aimed at protecting and vindicating all affected members of the Amasiri community.
Describing the move as a last resort, the lawyer said all reasonable avenues had been exhausted before deciding to seek judicial intervention.
“It is a settled principle of law that where there is a wrong, there must be a remedy,” Idam said, adding that the legal action is “compelled by necessity and guided by conscience.”
He expressed hope that justice would prevail, stating, “The just should not suffer for what they know nothing about.”
According to Idam: “Having written sufficiently, spoken persistently, and exercised considerable patience in the hope that the Governor would recognize his missteps and retrace his actions, particularly the avoidable sufferings inflicted upon me and a class of innocent citizens in and from Amasiri, yet to no avail, I am now constrained to approach the Federal High Court in pursuit of appropriate constitutional reliefs.
“This action is undertaken personally by me in my individual capacity. However, the reliefs sought are intended not merely for my benefit, but for the protection and vindication of every affected citizen of the Amasiri community.
“It is a settled principle of law that where there is a wrong, there must be a remedy. Having exhausted all reasonable avenues, this legal action has become the last constitutional resort, compelled by necessity and guided by conscience.”
