Ebonyi PDP factions clash over court’s nullification of Ibadan Convention

Two factions of the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have disagreed over a recent judgment by a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, which nullified the purported PDP National Convention held on November 15, 2025.

Both factions released statements asserting their interpretations of the convention’s authenticity and the court’s ruling, while reassuring party members of a brighter future and renewed vigor for the PDP in Ebonyi State.

In a statement signed by Engr. Kalu Francis, Publicity Secretary of the faction loyal to Abdulrahman Mohammad and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the court was commended for barring Alhaji Aminu Turaki and others, who emerged from the invalid convention, from parading themselves as national officers.

The statement noted that the court’s affirmation of the Caretaker Committee led by Ambassador Mohammad and Senator Anyanwu as the only recognized National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP reinforces the supremacy of the party constitution, due process, and the rule of law.

It further stressed that the judgment vindicates Senator Anyanwu’s consistent opposition to procedural violations, urging members to remain calm, united, and law-abiding as the party progresses in line with its constitution.

However, in a swift response, the faction loyal to Kabiru Turaki reaffirmed their strong support for Turaki as national chairman, insisting that the Ibadan convention, held between November 15 and 16, 2025, was conducted in accordance with the PDP constitution and relevant electoral laws.

In a statement signed by Hon. Nwafor Richard Nwali, the factional Publicity Secretary, the group asserted that despite attempts by some individuals to undermine the party, Ebonyi PDP remains focused on securing victory in 2027 under Turaki’s leadership.

The statement also commended the embattled National Vice Chairman (Southeast), Chief Ali Odefa, and other executives from the zone for their dedication to the party’s principles.

“We affirm the party’s commitment to peacefully resolving internal disputes in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines. We urge members to remain steadfast and supportive as we navigate the complexities of opposition politics in Nigeria,” the statement read.

It concluded by expressing confidence in Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and his ability to reposition the party for success in the 2027 elections.
