The Head of Department, Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Dr. Victor Usanga, has listed 72 undergraduates for withdrawal over poor academic performance, while 10 others are to be placed on probation.

In a document signed by the Head of Department and sighted by journalists in Abakaliki, 41 students in 100-level and 31 students in 200-level were recommended for withdrawal from the institution.

The document further indicated that eight students in 300-level and two in 400-level have been placed on academic probation.

According to the report, many of the affected students recorded Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) ranging from 0.00 to 2.44.

Reacting to the development, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of EBSU expressed concern over the publication of the withdrawal list.

SUG President, Chika Abraham Nwuhuo, said while the union acknowledges the authority of the university management to enforce policies aimed at maintaining academic standards and discipline, it is imperative that due process and transparency be strictly observed.

He noted that credible reports suggest some of the affected students are yet to access, review, or fully authenticate the results upon which the withdrawal decisions were based.

“In consideration of the foregoing, the Students’ Union Government earnestly advocates meticulous adherence to due process, administrative transparency, and comprehensive result verification prior to the ratification or public dissemination of any withdrawal list.

“Decisions of such far-reaching academic consequence must be anchored on procedural propriety, equity, and unimpeachable clarity,” he said.

The union urged affected students to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that constructive engagement with the university authorities was ongoing through appropriate institutional channels.

Nwuhuo reaffirmed the union’s commitment to protecting the academic rights, dignity, and welfare of all students, stressing that every student deserves fairness and transparency in matters relating to academic progressions.
