Former Manchester United man, Rio Ferdinand, has named Matthijs de Ligt as the indispensable player in Ruben Amorim’s squad.
The Englishman hailed the impact of the Dutch international, saying he has made himself the ‘first name on the manager’s teamsheet.
Manchester United have started the season very poorly and have also crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town.
They managed a 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday after the Blues were reduced to 10 men within six minutes of the encounter.
Amid their struggles, the Dutchman, De Ligt, seems to have improved massively and Ferdinand believes he has become indispensable to the manager.
He said on his YouTube channel, “Matthijs de Ligt has been magnificent this season, solid in all departments.
“I think he’s put himself in place to be the first name on the sheet if we go by [Leny] Yoro being a sub at the weekend. De Ligt now looks like the number one choice defender in the team from the manager’s point of view.
“I think he’s been so sound, and the fact that he’s keeping Harry Maguire out of the team says everything. He’s probably gone under my radar.”
The Dutch defender has not missed a single minute of the Premier League for Manchester United this season.
He joined the Red Devils last year from Bayern Munich in a deal worth £39 million.
