Premier League greats Ian Wright and Gianfranco Zola have expressed their views on the red card shown to Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo in the first half of their Premier League game against Arsenal on Sunday.
Caicedo was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Mikel Merino in the 38th minute, but the decision was upgraded to a straight red card after a VAR review.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, both Zola, a former Chelsea star and Wright, who played for Arsenal, agreed that Caicedo’s challenge was dangerous.
“I still think that’s a red,” Wright said. “He (the referee, Anthony Taylor) changed it, of course. In a moment. But he’s been very busy. Taylor, as you can see, has issued six cards, and that is the most in a Premier League half so far this season.”
Asked if he had any defence for his former club regarding the red card, Zola said, “Well, I think the defence is that he (Caicedo) was clearly going for the ball.
“Obviously, Merino was good, he got to the ball straight away and obviously it ended up in a bad tackle. Now, for sure, that’s a red card, no doubt about it. It was a bad challenge.”
At the time of filing this report, the scoreline stood at 1-1 between the two London sides.
A win for Arsenal would widen their gap at the top of the Premier League table, while a Chelsea win would reduce Mikel Arteta’s men’s lead to three points.
