The Computer Professionals (Registration) Council of Nigeria (CPN) has elected Dr. Essien Eyo as its 11th president and chairman of Council, Techeconomy can report.

The election took place on Thursday, 23 October 2025, via an online vote in which Dr. Eyo, who previously served as the CPN’s vice-president, secured 98 votes, representing 100 per cent of the valid ballots cast.

CPN is the statutory regulatory body established by Act No. 49 of 1993 (now CAP C22, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004) to control and supervise the practice of computing and information technology in Nigeria.

The Council is mandated to regulate, standardize, and develop the computing profession in the country through registration, certification, and monitoring of practitioners and corporate entities engaged in ICT-related activities.

Dr. Eyo’s election marks a seamless leadership transition for the CPN, which is the apex regulatory body overseeing the standards of practice, ethics and professional registration of computing practitioners in Nigeria.

He was elected unopposed, reflecting broad support and consensus from the professional community.

Also elected without opposition was Dr. Ali Usman Abdullahi as vice-president/Vice-chairman of Council, who likewise secured 98 votes in the process.

The results were announced by Dr. Mohammed Musa Abubakar, Chairman of the CPN’s 2025 Electoral Committee.

With his extensive experience within the Council and the broader IT profession, Dr. Eyo is expected to steer the organisation into a new phase of strategic development.

His leadership comes at a critical time, as Nigeria’s digital ecosystem continues to rapidly evolve and the need for competent computing professionals to support this growth becomes increasingly urgent.

Under Dr. Eyo’s tenure, priorities are likely to include strengthening the CPN’s regulatory capacity, enhancing professional standards, and aligning Nigeria’s computing industry with global best practices, thereby supporting the government’s digital transformation agenda and empowering the next generation of IT professionals.

Meanwhile, CPN also appointed Adebayo Adegbiji as the Registrar/Secretary to Council.

He succeeds Mr. Muhammad Bello Aliyu whose tenure lapses on 2nd December, 2025.
