FACT-CHECK: Did President Tinubu tweet that ASUU strike is a ‘minor issue’?

7 hours ago 2

Claim: President Bola Tinubu tweets that university lecturers going on strike is a “minor issue” and such a strike allows students to “learn skills.”

Verdict: Misleading.

Full Text: A viral screenshot on WhatsApp purportedly shows the official X handle of President Tinubu with a tweet that the Academic Staff Union of Universities going on strike is a minor issue.

The tweet reads in full: “ASUU going on strike for over 3 weeks now is a minor issue. At least, this is an opportunity for our students to learn skills and relax their brain. I don’t see any reason for the rush in academics.”

Recall that university lecturers recently declared a two-week warning strike over lingering disputes of welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU and Federal Government of Nigeria Agreement.

Prior to the strike, both the lecturers and government have met to discuss, which eventually did not avert the two-week strike that was later called off after a week and few days.

The purported tweet by President Tinubu could potentially upset students and citizens, and further undermine negotiation between ASUU and the government.

Verification:

Ripples Nigeria reports that no media outlet reported that President Tinubu made such a tweet which could have triggered an uproar.

Checks on the official X page of President Tinubu (@officialABAT) reveals no post undermining ASUU strike as the viral screenshot claims.

Using WaybackMachine, a digital archive of the internet, to further analyse @officialABAT for the tweet reveals no result.

However, using an excerpt from the tweet, Ripples Nigeria found the tweet on @Harmless1234 posted on October 20.

Conclusion

A viral screenshot purportedly showing a tweet by President Tinubu undermining the recent ASUU strike cannot be found on the X page of the President.
