Crack lines seem to have appeared within the Obidient movement, as a group claiming leadership on Thursday issued directives sacking prominent members of the group, while the previous leadership has dismissed the actions of the new group.
The Obidient Movement was created prior to the 2027 elections as a support base for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.
However, ahead of the 2027 general elections, the new group announced the immediate disbandment of the Movement and expulsion of the main focus of the Movement, Peter Obi, one his disciples, Yunusa Tanko and “all other persons appointed under the unauthorised leadership structure that emerged after the 2023 elections.”
Those behind the sacking premises the decision on political prostitution and its misuse for personal advantage and private gains.
They said they had consequently rebranded the organisation to #OBEDIENT Movement, to disengage it from Obi and his loyalists.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja to unveil the organisation, the International Coordinator of the #OBEDIENT Movement, Dr Barry Avotu Johnson, clarified that it has not yet adopted any presidential candidate for 2027 and has ceased to have any dealings with Labour Party.
According to him, the rebranding was necessary because after the 2023 elections, the original vision and founding ideals of the #Obidient Movement were no longer being adequately represented by those who assumed control of its structure.
But the Obidient Movement has dismissed the activities and announcement, stating the group was deliberately designed to create confusion around its identity and leadership.
Reacting, the Obidient Movement in a statement by its National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, stated that it recognises no parallel structure, faction, or alternative leadership outside its established and recognised leadership framework aligned with Obi.
The movement urged the public, media organisations, supporters across Nigeria and the diaspora stakeholders that any group operating under derivative deceptively similar identities does not represent the Obidient Movement, its values or its leadership.
The Obidient Movement stated that it remains a people-driven movement founded on accountability, justice, and the collective aspiration for a New Nigeria.
“Attempts to create confusion, misrepresent the movement’s identity, or exploit its growing influence for ulterior interests will not distract us from our mission and ongoing engagement with Nigerians across all levels.
“We urge all Obidients and members of the public to remain focused, united, and guided only by communications issued through the officially recognized leadership and communication channels of the movement.
“The vision of a New Nigeria remains alive, clear, and unwavering,” the Obidient Movement said.
