Fire guts six-storey Afriland Towers on Lagos Island

A fire broke out at the six-storey Afriland Tower in Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday.

The Deputy Comptroller-General of the Lagos State Fire Service (LSFRS), Ogabi Olajide, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on the agency’s X handle.

She said the inferno started in the inverter room located in the basement of the building before thick smoke spread to other floors.

The deputy CG added that firefighters from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations were immediately deployed to put off the fire.

However, no casualty has been reported at the time of filing this report.

The building houses a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and other businesses.

“The Fire originated in the inverter room located in the basement of the building, while smoke has spread across multiple floors and engulfed the structure.

“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have been concluded, dousing the earlier panic before the arrival of the first responders,” the statement read.
