Fire ravages 3-storey building, warehouses at Ejalonibu Market on Lagos Island

A fire outbreak on Saturday caused extensive damage to a three-storey commercial building and adjoining warehouses at Ejalonibu Market, located within the Oke-Arin/Ebute Ero axis of Lagos Island Local Government Area, destroying goods valued at millions of naira.

Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to the incident and successfully extinguished the blaze.

The fire, which reportedly started at about 2:30 p.m., affected a three-storey commercial structure housing warehouses, shops and storage facilities. The immediate and remote causes of the incident had not been determined as of press time.

No casualties were recorded in the incident.

Confirming the development, the Controller-General of the LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, said the agency received a distress call at about 14:42 hours and immediately deployed firefighters to the scene.

She explained that responders arrived within minutes to battle the inferno, which later spread to a second three-storey building located behind the initial structure, also used for commercial purposes.

“Through, coordinated firefighting operations and strategic deployment of resources, emergency responders were able to bring the situation under control as it was confined to the second floor of the initial building.

“While the adjoining structure have the second and third floors was sparsely affected and prevented further escalation to nearby properties,” she stated.

Adeseye further confirmed that, “No casualty was recorded in the incident, while preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.”

She reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging traders, market operators and the general public to adopt proper fire safety measures, including safe storage of combustible materials and the prompt reporting of emergencies.
