Former SGF, Lawal, accuses Tinubu govt of nepotism, economic mismanagement

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of nepotism, poor economic management, and electoral malpractice.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, on Monday, Lawal said he was grateful not to be part of the current government, stressing that he would not have been able to cope under its leadership.

“I thank God that I didn’t make the mistake of being in this government ab initio,” he said. “If I were in this government, I probably would have been sacked a long time ago, killed or resigned.”

The former SGF alleged that appointments under President Tinubu have been heavily skewed in favour of the Yoruba ethnic group.

“I cannot go to a meeting in which 99 per cent of the participants are Yoruba. The tendency is that they finish the meeting in their language, and I am just sitting there,” Lawal stated.

He recalled events during the 2023 campaign, referencing Tinubu’s “emi lokan” remark in Ogun State and claiming that some of the President’s supporters disparaged northerners.

“The problem with the Yoruba is that when you support them and they win, they behave as if they have subdued you. They will not count your support,” he alleged.

On the economy, Lawal faulted the administration’s handling of the fuel subsidy removal announced in May 2023, arguing that Nigerians had yet to see any tangible benefits. He claimed that despite the public declaration, the government was still effectively paying subsidies.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain also weighed in on the 2023 presidential election, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of rigging the poll.

When asked who he believed won, Lawal replied: “Peter Obi won that election.”
