Tears flowed freely at Sign Board Junction in Umuahia on Friday after a tragic collision between a Mack truck and a tricycle claimed the lives of four passengers, leaving a lone baby as the only survivor.

The tricycle, which had taken off from Umuahia main town and was heading towards the Ohuhu area of the Abia capital, met tragedy when it reportedly rammed into the truck at the busy junction.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said four passengers in the tricycle died on the spot, while a baby belonging to one of the victims miraculously survived the crash.

As of press time, the exact cause of the accident had not been officially confirmed. However, some residents blamed reckless driving by both vehicle operators.

When contacted at 6:12 p.m., the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed that two persons had been confirmed dead. She added that rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene and promised to release full details in due course.

In a separate but related incident earlier in the day, a pregnant woman sustained serious injuries in a crash along the Uzuakoli–Ohafia Road. The accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus and another tricycle.

According to reports, the bus was being driven in heavy rain without functional windscreen wipers, which led to a collision with the tricycle.

The injured woman and other victims were rushed to a hospital in Umuahia for urgent medical attention.
