The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended four suspected cult members following a violent confrontation in Nsugbe community, located in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Tuesday behind Nwafor Orizu College of Education, where the suspects were seen attacking each other with cutlasses, broken bottles, daggers, and other weapons.
In a statement released Wednesday, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrests, which came after a coordinated operation involving police officers and local vigilante groups.
According to Ikenga, “On September 16, 2025, at about 7 am, armed miscreants suspected to be cultists were sighted attacking one another with cutlasses, broken bottles, daggers and other dangerous weapons behind Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.”
He added that the combined Police/Vigilante team swiftly responded and apprehended four suspects: Oyachonam Friday, 26; Akachukwu Ekwenze, 23; David Chukwuma, 25; and Eziolise Aloysius, 23, while others escaped into nearby bushes.

During the clash, one suspect, David Chukwuma, sustained machete injuries. “He has been provided with medical care and is currently responding to treatment for onward necessary action by the operatives,” Ikenga stated.
The suspects have confessed to being members of the notorious “AYES” confraternity, and investigations are ongoing to track down the others who fled.
“The case is currently under investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing cultists,” Ikenga noted.
The police commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents, saying, “The Command remains relentless in its fight against cultism and other forms of violent crimes in the State.”
