Gmail users across several regions reported disruptions on Saturday as Google acknowledged an issue affecting spam detection and email classification on its popular email platform.
According to Google Workspace’s official status dashboard, the problem began around 5am Pacific time, causing emails to be misclassified and triggering additional spam warnings for messages that would normally be considered safe.
As a result, many users found their primary inbox flooded with emails that typically appear under Promotions, Social, or Updates, while some legitimate messages from known senders were incorrectly flagged with spam warnings.
Others complained on social media that spam messages were bypassing Gmail’s filters entirely, landing directly in their inboxes. Some users described the situation as Gmail’s filtering system being “suddenly completely busted.”

The disruption has raised concerns about the reliability of Gmail’s automated spam detection, which millions of users rely on daily to protect against phishing and malicious content.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Google confirmed it was aware of the issue and said engineers were working to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
“We are actively working to resolve the issue,” the company said, adding that users should continue to follow standard safety practices when interacting with messages from unknown senders until the problem is fully resolved.
