Google’s Gemini AI fagged as ‘high risk’ for children, teen users in safety review

Google’s artificial intelligence platform, Gemini, has been flagged as “high risk” for children and teenagers by a research team in a new online safety assessment.

The evaluation, conducted by child-safety researchers, warns that Gemini’s interactive features could expose minors to harmful content, misinformation, and potential privacy breaches. According to the report, the AI’s ability to generate unfiltered responses raises concerns about its suitability for under-18 users.

The assessment also highlighted risks tied to targeted advertising, data collection, and the possibility of harmful or manipulative content slipping through moderation filters. “Children and teens are especially vulnerable to persuasive technologies, and Gemini’s scale amplifies that risk,” the report noted.

Google, which has been positioning Gemini as a central part of its AI-driven future, is expected to face mounting regulatory scrutiny over the findings. In response, the company reiterated its commitment to safety, stressing that it has built-in guardrails, parental control options, and continues to improve its protective systems.

“Gemini gets some basics right, but it stumbles on the details,” Common Sense Media Senior Director of AI Programs Robbie Torney said in a statement . “An AI platform for kids should meet them where they are, not take a one-size-fits-all approach to kids at different stages of development. For AI to be safe and effective for kids, it must be designed with their needs and development in mind, not just a modified version of a product built for adults,” Torney added.
