Civil society groups in Osun State have raised concerns about potential implications for public confidence following the redeployment of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mutiu Agboke, to Ondo State.
The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations working on Civic Education shifted focus to the effect of the decision on voter trust, noting that the timing could influence perceptions of the electoral process ahead of key activities.
In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Ambassador Dr Stephen Aremu Akinleye on Wednesday, the coalition said the development had prompted questions among stakeholders about continuity and stability within the electoral system.
Akinleye stated, “We are concerned that the redeployment, coming at a sensitive period, may affect the level of trust that has been gradually built between citizens and the electoral body.”
He added that the coalition’s engagements with Agboke had fostered confidence, stressing that “his tenure was marked by openness, professionalism and a commitment to inclusive dialogue.”
According to the group, structured interactions between the electoral commission and stakeholders had encouraged broader participation and strengthened civic awareness across the state.
The coalition warned that abrupt administrative changes could create uncertainty among political actors and voters, particularly where adequate explanations are not provided.
“Such developments may undermine trust, create confusion among stakeholders and potentially discourage voter participation if not properly managed,” Akinleye said.
While acknowledging that redeployment falls within the administrative powers of the electoral commission, the group called for transparency, urging the commission to clearly communicate the reasons behind the decision.
The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to supporting electoral processes in Osun, stating that it would continue collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure credible, transparent and peaceful elections.
