The former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has advocated for terrorist sympathisers and those who are against the recent airstrikes by the United States to be bundled to the notorious Sambisa Forest and other terror hotspots like Zamfara and Sokoto states so they can preach to the terrorists.

In a post on his X on Monday, Sani criticised opponents of military actions against terrorist groups, suggesting that they should personally engage the insurgents instead.

In the post, the lawmaker turned political activist argued that those against military operations against terrorists and bandits should be transported to conflict-prone areas to test their preferred approaches including preaching to them instead of the military approach.

“Those who are opposed to striking those terrorist groups should be assembled and transported to the hinterlands of Zamfara and Sokoto or even Sambisa so that they can preach, talk or negotiate with them so that they will stop murdering and kidnapping our people. When one is opposed to one thing, he should be able to do another,” he wrote.

Though he did not mention any particular name, the former Senator may have referred to the likes of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi who has been consistent in criticizing the US action while calling on the federal government to dialogue with the terrorists and bandits instead of using military force on them, arguing that the airstrikes will not achieve any meaningful solution to terrorism.

The controversial Sheikh Gumi, had, on several occasions, defended his long-held view that negotiating with bandits is necessary, describing such engagement as a practical means to save lives and maintain peace.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Gumi had said the only option is to negotiate with the criminal elements instead of using military firepower to dislodge them.

“Everybody negotiates with bandits,” he has said in the interview.

“That word ‘we don’t negotiate’, I don’t know where they got it from. It’s not in the Bible. It’s not in the Quran. In fact, it’s not even in practice. Everybody’s negotiating with outlaws, non-state actors, everybody. So who got it, and where did they get that knowledge from? We negotiate for peace and our strategic interests. If negotiation will bring stoppage to bloodshed, we will do it,” he had reiterated.
