Hard knocks for comedian Mr Jollof for claiming improved power supply in Nigeria

Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has stirred controversy after claiming he has enjoyed steady electricity supply since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.

The comedian made the claim in a video shared on his Instagram page, where he described an improvement in power supply in his area.

His remarks quickly sparked debate online, with many Nigerians disputing the claim as communities across the country continue to report frequent power outages.

In the video, Mr Jollof maintained that he was speaking based on his personal experience and not dismissing the difficulties faced by others dealing with unstable electricity.

“I have the right to share my personal experience, just as everyone else has the right to express their own views,” he said.

According to the comedian, electricity supply in his locality has improved by about 85 percent compared to previous administrations, adding that the situation has become stable enough that he no longer relies on an inverter for power.

“I want to show how we have been able to enjoy a stable electricity supply since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came into power. The situation now is much better than it was before. I don’t even need an inverter anymore,” he stated.

Mr Jollof also pointed out that the current administration has introduced policies allowing states to generate and distribute electricity independently, suggesting that residents experiencing poor electricity supply should raise their concerns with their state governments and relevant power authorities.

“Go ask your governor or your commissioner of power and energy why you’re not getting electricity,” he said.

Despite the clarification, the video attracted strong criticism on social media, with some Nigerians accusing the comedian of defending the government at a time when many households and businesses continue to grapple with erratic power supply and rising energy costs.
