Former England goalkeeper, David James, has named Chelsea goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez as the best shot-stopper in the Premier League.

The former goalkeeper believes the Spaniard, who he described as outstanding can be the ‘foundation’ of Chelsea’s Premier League title challenge.

A number of pundits are of the belief that Chelsea cannot win any major trophy unless they replace the former Brighton goalkeeper.

Sanchez, who joined Chelsea for £25m from Brighton, was blamed for the Blues failure to challenge for the title last season following a number of errors from him.

James, speaking to Metro, the former England goalkeeper was asked who he sees as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League and he described Sanchez as ‘outstanding.’

James believes the Spaniard can be a key player as Chelsea look to clinch the Premier League trophy.

Asked who he views as the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, James hailed the performances of the likes of Arsenal goalkeeper, David Raya, Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Liverpool’s Allison Becker, who he believes are “definitely up there” as the best performing shot-stoppers at the moment.

“But the one I was actually going to say was Robert Sanchez. I know there are a lot of people who look at Sanchez and question his capabilities but I think he is outstanding,” he added.

“I think the one thing that he’s done this season, more so than last season, is contribute with his distribution. His long balls, similar to David Raya, have been exceptional, not only getting the team out of trouble, but actually starting attack moves.

“So I just think that we’ve got a goalkeeper there who I think will be the foundation for Chelsea’s challenge for the title.

“With Robert Sanchez they[Chelsea] have got a goalkeeper who I think could deliver for them this season.”

Going into this weekend’s set of games, Chelsea is currently fifth in the Premier League.

The Blues, who return from Europe after a 5-1 bashing of Ajax, will face in-form newly-promoted side Sunderland on Saturday.’
