Tensions in Nigeria’s health sector escalated on Thursday as workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations took to the streets in Abuja, protesting controversial reform bills currently before the National Assembly.
The demonstrators gathered at the Unity Fountain in Maitama, voicing strong opposition to the proposed legislation, which they say could fundamentally reshape the regulatory framework of the country’s healthcare system.
At the centre of the protest is a provision in the bill that, according to the unions, seeks to centralise control of all medical professions under the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. The protesters warned that such a move would erode the autonomy of existing professional bodies and distort the balance within the sector.
Health workers at the rally insisted that each profession already operates under its own regulatory council, arguing that the proposed law risks diminishing the roles of other healthcare practitioners.
They further alleged that the bill is designed to make non-physician health workers “second-class” to medical doctors.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the protesters maintained that the legislation, if passed in its current form, could trigger widespread discontent across the health sector and negatively impact service delivery nationwide.
The unions also confirmed plans to take their protest directly to the National Assembly Complex, where they intend to formally present their grievances to lawmakers and demand a review of the proposed reforms.
The demonstration follows an earlier notice issued by the unions announcing a nationwide protest against the Health Sector Executive Bills 2026. In the communication obtained on Thursday morning, the groups said the action would mobilise healthcare professionals from across the country, all converging in Abuja to press their demands.
With stakeholders sharply divided, the unfolding standoff signals a potential flashpoint in Nigeria’s health sector, as workers push back against reforms they fear could redefine professional hierarchies and weaken institutional independence.
