How Oyo Talent Tribe is Redefining State’s Tech Narrative

For years, the tech scene in Oyo State followed a familiar, albeit slow, pattern. While Ibadan is famously characterized by its historic brown roofs and a culture of vibrant ceremonies, its tech ecosystem was largely defined by event-hopping.

Talents moved from one networking mixer to another, often building in silos and waiting for the ecosystem to grow itself.

However, a shift is happening. Oyo Talent Tribe, the state’s largest community for technical talent, is breaking that cycle. Their mission is clear: move beyond the motivation-only events and dive deep into practical innovation.

Recognizing that the ecosystem needed skill development over social gatherings, Oyo Talent Tribe launched BuildWithOyo (BWO).

Supported by the Oyo State Government, the initiative was designed as a high-intensity bridge between raw talent and industry-ready expertise through three core pillars: Skill Development, Mentorship, and a Collaborative Hackathon.

The demand was staggering. Out of over 1,500 applicants, 400+ elite individuals were selected. To ensure the impact wasn’t centralized only in the capital, the program was decentralized across five key locations, including Ibadan and Ogbomoso.

By partnering with local innovation hubs, BWO successfully bridged the gap between physical infrastructure and human capital.

Deep Dives and Collaborative Building

The program moved away from “surface-level” talks. Participants were immersed in specialized tracks led by industry experts, covering the frontiers of modern technology:

• Cybersecurity & Web3
• Cloud DevOps & Full-Stack Development
• Product Design

With 15+ Facilitators and 10 dedicated Mentors, the talent didn’t just learn; they built. The Hackathon track saw 20+ teams working around the clock, proving that the future of Oyo tech lies in collective problem-solving rather than solo efforts.

The Vision: Africa’s Next Silicon Valley

The goal of Oyo Talent Tribe is long-term. “We are prioritizing small, high-impact programs over massive, superficial events,” the organizers stated. “In the next few years, we envision Ibadan not just as a city of culture, but as a Silicon Valley of Africa—where talent isn’t just ‘building’ for the sake of it, but solving real-world global problems.

This transformation was made possible through a robust network of partners. Leading the support was VarsityScape, an AI-powered “Academy Operating System” enabling the scaling of modern education.
