A prominent Kano based human rights activist, Abba Hikima, has expressed concern over comments allegedly made by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, suggesting that the phone lines of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, were being tapped.
Hikima, in a Facebook post on Saturday, described the alleged admission as a grave threat to national security and a brazen disregard for the rule of law.
“So Nasir El-Rufai recklessly admitted on a national television that they are tapping and listening to NSA’s phone calls?” Hikima wrote.
He argued that the issue transcends partisan politics, warning that any unauthorized surveillance of the office of the National Security Adviser undermines public trust and the integrity of Nigeria’s security architecture.
“Now this is beyond politics. It is a threat to national security and brazen confrontation to the rule of law,” he stated.
Hikima noted that regardless of political affiliations or perceived biases, the National Security Adviser occupies a sensitive position responsible for safeguarding the country’s security interests.
“The NSA, no matter how partisan or self-serving he may be, is definitely also serving the Nigerian public in the sensitive matters of their security. Tapping his calls and admitting same publicly shouldn’t just be condoned,” he added.
The activist called for immediate action by relevant authorities, insisting that anyone responsible for such an act should be investigated and held accountable.
“Whoever they are that admitted this conduct should be immediately arrested and interrogated if Nigeria is worth its salt,” he said.
