Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said he met more than 600 billion in the states coffers after the end of emergency rule, stressing that his administration remains committed to prudent and transparent management of public funds. The governor stated that before President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule in the state, his administration left about 300 billion in government accounts, noting that official records clearly support his claim.Fubara made the remarks on Wednesday during the commissioning of the 14.2-kilometre ObodhiOzochi Road, which connects Ahoada East and Ahoada West Local Government Areas of Rivers State. His comments followed criticisms from the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, who questioned the condition of public schools in the state and raised concerns about the utilisation of funds left behind by the immediate past Sole Administrator, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd).Amaewhule had earlier disclosed during a plenary session that over 600 billion was handed over to the state government after emergency rule was lifted. He also criticised the poor state of Township State School 1 along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, noting the absence of basic facilities such as toilets despite the schools proximity to Government House. The Speaker made the remarks while responding to a report by the House Committee on Education, chaired by Hon. Aforji Igwe, following an inspection visit to the school. He questioned how available state funds were being spent, a development that appeared to revive tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government.Responding indirectly, Fubara maintained that all state funds were being responsibly utilised and that expenditure records under his administration were open, transparent, and verifiable.Today, I want to also say to the whole world, when we left during the emergency rule, our records were there. We left over 300 billion. When we came back, we met about 600 billion and something, the governor said.He added that he remains confident in the integrity of his leadership, assuring residents that the records of how public funds are being spent are intact and accessible. If there is one thing I can say and do that Im even proud of, nobody can associate me with anything bad. Your money and the records of how your money is being spent are intact. We have very strong projects that we are doing, he said. Fubara further assured that within six months, his administration would clearly present verifiable details of how public funds are being deployed across the state. He explained that some criticisms stem from his governments preference for completing projects before commissioning them, rather than engaging in frequent project flag-off ceremonies. Maybe the reason some people believe there is something happening that they are not aware of is that we dont believe in fluffing off projects. We believe in commissioning them, he stated.
