Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has yet to receive a response from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) regarding his bail application, according to his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, on Monday.
El-Rufai voluntarily reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16 following an invitation. He was detained until February 18, when he was transferred to ICPC custody.
Adekeye, in a post on X, stated:
“Today marks eight days since Malam Nasir El-Rufai was detained. His lawyers have not received any response from the ICPC to their application for bail; and they have not been shown any remand order as the 48-hour window for holding a person without charge has expired.”
Court Hearings Scheduled
Adekeye confirmed that El-Rufai is scheduled for arraignment on February 25 on charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS). On the same day, the FCT High Court will hear his fundamental rights case against the Federal Government, ICPC, EFCC, and DSS, seeking an order to admit him to bail.
Timeline of Events
- February 12: El-Rufai returned to Nigeria; his passport was seized during a failed arrest attempt.
- February 13: ICPC issued a letter requesting him to report.
- February 16–18: He remained in EFCC custody despite being granted administrative bail with conditions, including a federal permanent secretary as surety.
- February 19: ICPC searched his Aso Drive residence. His lawyer, Ubong Akpan, condemned the search as “unlawful and a clear violation of legal procedures and fundamental rights.”
- February 20: ICPC continued interrogations.
- February 23: El-Rufai filed a suit at the Federal High Court challenging the search warrant as invalid, citing ambiguity, overbreadth, and lack of probable cause.
Akpan further described the continued detention as unlawful, noting restricted access for family and lawyers. He added that the bail application submitted after the search has still not been addressed.
