Idoma governorship requires partnership with Tiv – Andrea Aba

A Benue governorship aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Engr. Andrew Aba, has cautioned against framing the quest for an Idoma governor in Benue State as an entitlement, saying the goal can only be achieved through strategic partnership, inclusivity, and deliberate political engagement.

Aba, who declared his intention to run for governor in September 2025, said initial resistance to his ambition came largely from within the Idoma nation itself, with sceptics insisting that the Tiv majority would never allow an Idoma person to govern the state.

According to him, such pessimism did not deter his resolve, noting that sustained advocacy and visible political moves gradually ignited belief among Idoma people and beyond.
“Over time, people began to see that an Idoma governorship is possible. Many who keyed into the vision did not even know me personally, but they believed in the momentum and the hope it created,” he said.

However, Aba expressed concern over recent calls by some Idoma voices demanding that the Tiv people “hand over” power, warning that such rhetoric is dangerous and counterproductive.

He described narratives branding the Tiv as oppressors or accusing them of deliberate political suppression as divisive and harmful to the collective future of Benue State.
“Leadership is not given; power is taken. And it is taken through strategy, not entitlement,” Aba said.

He stressed that the realisation of an Idoma governor must be built on constructive engagement and partnership with the Tiv nation, noting that many Tiv people are already sympathetic to the idea.

“What is required is appeal, collaboration, and a clear demonstration of how Idoma leadership will serve the collective interest of Benue people,” he added.

Aba urged proponents of Idoma governorship to abandon tribal sentiments and bigotry, and instead embrace a narrative of unity, shared progress, and mutual respect.

“We must build a future where Idoma leadership is a reality, not a fantasy, [and] a beacon of hope for a united and prosperous Benue State,” he said.
