Immigration warns criminals against attempting to flee Nigeria

The Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Lagos State Command, Aliyu Akadri, has issued a stern warning to criminals considering fleeing the country, stating that such attempts are increasingly futile due to enhanced border surveillance and the deployment of advanced security technologies.

Akadri gave the warning on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, at the Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos.

He noted that the Federal Government’s investment in modern surveillance systems and digital tracking tools has significantly improved the service’s capacity to monitor and secure Nigeria’s borders.

“Once we get an order from the court that a criminal is wanted or someone is being sought, we remain on alert,” Akadri stated. “The Federal Government has assisted us in so many ways, making our job very easy. There is no way a criminal can sneak out of the country now that we have acquired new systems.”

He further emphasized that even individuals who attempt to flee through unofficial or illegal routes would be apprehended, as the NIS has intensified efforts to close all gaps within the border security architecture.

“Any criminal who has a mind of fleeing the country should better have a rethink because he or she will surely be apprehended,” he warned.

Akadri also underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration between the NIS and the Nigeria Police Force, highlighting that intelligence-sharing and mutual support remain critical to national security.

“We need each other’s cooperation and collaboration. You cannot underestimate anybody. If there is any intelligence report we gather from our end, I can easily send it to my brother here. And if there’s anything the Police can assist us with, at least my brother can call me,” he said. “We are working towards the same goal: to protect Nigeria.”

In response, CP Olohundare Jimoh lauded the longstanding cooperation between the two agencies and reiterated the Lagos Police Command’s readiness to deepen inter-agency collaboration with the NIS.

“The NIS and the Police have been working together for a long time,” CP Jimoh said. “I want to assure you that during your tenure, we are going to strengthen that cordial working relationship to take it to a higher level, to ensure we achieve the objectives the government has set for us, especially in the area of internal security.”

He added that coordination and joint action between both agencies would be key to providing residents and visitors in Lagos with robust and responsive security.

“Working together, we are going to put coordination at the centre stage to ensure that the people of Lagos and visitors alike enjoy the best of security cooperation between the two agencies,” the Police Commissioner said.
