In Urhobo land, female children are not rated but my father rewrote the narrative - Nigerian woman says as she share photo with her sisters

A Nigerian woman, Confidence Maye Utomi, has expressed her appreciation to her father for the pride he takes in his daughters despite hailing from a culture with a deep patriarchal root.   She shared this in a Facebook post on Tuesday while recalling how people reminded her father that female children are not rated in Urhobo land after her mother gave birth to three girls before the arrival of her brothers.   Sharing a photo with her sisters, Confidence, said their father sees them as his pride, joy and answered prayers. In Urhobo land, if your wife hasnt given birth to a male child, they do not regard the man and his family. As a matter of fact, the family of the man would call their son and advice him to take a second wife, she wrote.  And even up till this minute, that tradition is still very strong, civilization hasnt taken over that aspect. I wouldnt want to say my dad loves his female children more than his male children. But you see these 3 girls, Mr. Roland doesnt joke with them. My dad can go any length to do whatever we ask for. When I was born, people told my dad that girl children arent rated in Urhobo land. But my father didnt listen to culture, noise, or stereotypes. He speak boldly, and to never feel less because of our gender. To him, we werent just girls, we are his pride, his joy, his answered prayers. Even though my mom later gave birth to 3 other boys, my dad has never seen his female children as less. The same way my brothers are valued is also same way the girls are valued. Today, we stand confident, loved, and supported because one man decided to rewrite a narrative. Thank you, Daddy, for proving that value is not determined by gender, and that a fathers love can silence generations of bias   The post In Urhobo land, female children are not rated but my father rewrote the narrative - Nigerian woman says as she share photo with her sisters appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
