Ini Edo appeals against withdrawal of new movie from cinema

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has appealed to the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and the general public not to withdraw her newly released movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, from cinemas, insisting that the film does not ridicule Christianity in any way.

In an emotional video shared on her Instagram page on Sunday night, Edo repeatedly pleaded that the movie be allowed to continue screening nationwide. She stressed that the controversy surrounding the film was based on its title rather than its actual content and urged critics to watch the movie before forming opinions.

“Just don’t pull my film, please. Just allow people to watch,” the actress said. She added that she would personally take responsibility if the film was found to dishonour God or Christianity, saying she would withdraw it herself if that were the case.

Explaining the intention behind the title, Edo stated that it was never meant to demean the Christian faith. According to her, the film focuses on family conflicts and unfolding secrets rather than any form of religious mockery, insisting that “this film has no dirt in it.”

The actress lamented the potential financial impact of withdrawing the movie, revealing that significant investments had already been made. She said the film was showing in over 70 cinemas nationwide and had benefited from extensive print, media and digital promotions.

Edo also confirmed that regulators had asked her to change the movie’s title and expressed willingness to comply, while pleading for time. She apologised to anyone offended by the title, stressing that there was no malicious intent and reaffirming her Christian faith.

The controversy followed concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which described the title as offensive in a statement signed by its president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh. While the NFVCB said it had requested a title modification in response to public concerns, Edo concluded by appealing for understanding, saying, “All I’m asking is, don’t pull my film. Give me a fair fighting ground. Let people watch it.”
