Insecurity: Consider resignation – Lawyer urges Tinubu

A lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, on Saturday urged President Bola Tinubu to consider resignation if the worsening insecurity in Nigeria becomes overwhelming.

Idam described resignation as a legitimate option in the interest of citizens’ safety.

In a statement he signed, Idam acknowledged the complex and evolving nature of insecurity in the country but questioned the administration’s approach since assuming office.

He argued that the current strategy mirrors that of previous governments, relying heavily on conventional combat methods which, he said, are inadequate for tackling modern security challenges.

“Unfortunately, the President’s strategy has not changed from that of his predecessors. It remains the old doctrinal security template, predicated solely on manual combat of insecurity, which is ill-suited to the complexities of modern security challenges in Nigeria,” he said.

According to Idam, Nigeria should be investing more in technology-driven solutions, including satellite surveillance, CCTV networks, and drones, to enhance intelligence gathering and proactive response to threats.

Idam also expressed concern over the handling of internally displaced persons, alleging insufficient attention to citizens affected by violence and displacement.

“Resignation is not a taboo; it is a legitimate option that Mr. President must consider in the interest of the safety of Nigerians,” he said.

“Truth be told, insecurity in Nigeria has assumed a form that even a president like Tinubu, in all fairness, could not simply crush in a single move; it is multidimensional in nature and asymmetrical in operation.

“But the question is: what has Tinubu done differently as a man who saw the situation, prepared for the task, and eventually got the position?”

He warned that continued reliance on outdated security measures may not yield meaningful results, adding that citizens could resort to legal action over the protection of their fundamental rights.

“We cannot continue this way,” he added.
