Insecurity: Gov Adeleke urges Nigeria Police to unseal Amotekun offices

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has urged the Nigeria Police Force to immediately unseal the offices of the Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun.

This is as Governor Adeleke insisted that the unsealing of the offices in Ile-Ife and Osogbo will address the rising cases of banditry and kidnapping threatening the state.

The governor also raised concerns over possible spillover of criminal activities from neighbouring Kwara State into Osun and warned that the situation could worsen if proactive security measures are not restored.

Speaking in Osogbo on Thursday, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke cited a fresh kidnapping incident in the Ora-Igbomina area as evidence of growing insecurity along the state’s border communities.

He said “the state’s security response has been weakened because Amotekun operations were sealed by the police, while some of its senior officers have remained in detention for several months without trial”.

According to the governor, “Amotekun operatives possess specialised knowledge and experience in securing rural and border areas. This is currently lacking due to the suspension of their activities.”

Adeleke noted that the shutdown of the outfit has created security gaps that are being exploited by bandits and other criminal elements operating in vulnerable communities.

The governor appealed directly to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure that detained Amotekun officers are charged to court and that the agency is allowed to resume operations.

He warned that further delay in resolving the issue could expose rural dwellers to increased danger and leave the state open to deeper criminal infiltration.

“I am taking this matter to the public domain in view of another kidnapping at Ora-Igbomina. Closing down Amotekun exposes Osun people to serious risks.

“Those officers in detention should be charged to court after several months of incarceration. Any further delay in the unsealing of Amotekun will further jeopardise the safety and security of our people,” the governor added.

The offices of Amotekun Osun in Ile-Ife and Osogbo were raised and sealed by the Nigeria Police in the aftermath of the Akinlalu killings on September 30, 2025.

It was alleged that rogue personnel of Osun Amotekun had gone on a killing spree in Akinlalu town in order to retake their arms that was allegedly confiscated by some thugs.

Also, the Osun Amotekun Corps Commander, Isaac Omoyele and some personnel arrested during the raid of the Amotekun offices are still in police detention in Abuja.

Wives of arrested personnel in January protested and called on government and relevant authorities to free their husbands as they are innocent of the crimes alleged against them.
