An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi to a multi-year prison term, along with travel restrictions and internal exile, according to her lawyer.
Lawyer Mostafa Nili told AFP on Sunday that “She has been sentenced to six years in prison for gathering and collusion to commit crimes,” and said the court also imposed a two-year ban on her leaving the country.
In addition to that sentence, Mohammadi received a further one-and-a-half years in prison on charges linked to propaganda activities and was ordered into two years of exile in the eastern city of Khosf, in South Khorasan province, Nili said. Under Iran’s legal system, prison sentences are served concurrently.
Citing her ongoing medical problems, Nili said he hoped Mohammadi might be temporarily “released on bail to receive treatment”. He added that the ruling is not final and remains subject to appeal.

Mohammadi, 53, has faced repeated arrests and prosecutions over the past 25 years for her outspoken opposition to Iran’s use of the death penalty and enforcement of the mandatory dress code for women.
She has spent much of the last decade in prison and has not seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.
In December 2024, she was granted a three-week medical release following surgery, which her lawyer said was related to “her physical condition after the removal of a tumour and a bone graft,”.
Despite her imprisonment, Mohammadi has continued to protest from behind bars, including organising demonstrations in the prison yard and undertaking hunger strikes.
She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, largely in recognition of her campaign against capital punishment in Iran. Unable to attend the ceremony, her children accepted the prize on her behalf while she remained in detention.
Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, say Iran carries out more executions annually than any country except China, where no reliable figures are available.
