The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has said that Israel has never publicly admitted possessing nuclear weapons.
Freeman made the remarks on Friday while responding to questions during an interview on The Morning Show on Arise Television.
According to him, Israel’s position has consistently been that it will not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into the region.
“Well, firstly, Israel has never said that we have nuclear weapons. That’s your statement. Israel’s policy has always been that we won’t be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into the region,” he said.
Freeman argued that the central concern should instead be Iran’s stance toward Israel, accusing Iran of openly expressing hostility toward Israel.
He said Iran had repeatedly declared its intention to destroy Israel and had taken actions over several decades aimed at achieving that objective.
“The issue here is not about Israel. The issue is about Iran. Iran is the only country in the world, in the United Nations, that expressly desires to wipe another country off the face of the earth,” Freeman said.
The ambassador also accused Iran of sponsoring militant groups and supporting activities around the world aimed at destabilising Israel.
Freeman maintained that Israel would not allow a country that has openly expressed the desire to destroy it to obtain nuclear weapons.
“Iran has stated its policy is to destroy Israel, to wipe Israel off the map. We’ve seen over 47 years that they have taken actions to try to make that happen. We’ve seen them sponsor terror organisations and actions across the world in pursuit of that goal,” he said.
