Iran sets conditions for ending war as president demands reparations

President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran has outlined the conditions under which the country could consider bringing the ongoing conflict to an end, insisting that any ceasefire must be backed by firm international guarantees preventing further attacks.

In a message posted Wednesday on X, the Iranian leader said that halting the war would depend on assurances that hostilities against Iran would permanently stop.

He wrote that the only path to ending the conflict would be through binding commitments from the international community.

Pezeshkian also demanded compensation for the damage caused during the fighting and stressed that Iran’s national interests must be acknowledged.

He stated that reparations were necessary and that Iran’s “legitimate rights” must be recognized.

Although the president did not elaborate on what those rights entail, analysts monitoring Iran’s domestic politics believe the reference may relate to the recent leadership transition in the country and the expectation that the international community acknowledge the appointment of a new supreme leader.

The remarks come amid growing tensions following the emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new religious leader and head of state.

Earlier in the week, Donald Trump, president of the United States, expressed dissatisfaction with Khamenei’s rise to power and warned that the new leader could face serious challenges.

“I don’t believe he can live in peace,” Trump said, without giving further details.
