Authorities in the United Kingdom have arrested a 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old woman following an attempted breach of a high-security military facility housing the country’s nuclear deterrent.
The suspects were arrested around 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at HM Naval Base Clyde, commonly known as Faslane, according to Police Scotland.
Officials said the pair were intercepted after attempting to gain unauthorised access to the base, which is located near Helensburgh.
Confirming the incident, the Royal Navy described the attempt as unsuccessful and said investigations are ongoing.
“The matter is subject to an ongoing investigation,” a spokesperson said, declining to provide further details.
While authorities confirmed the male suspect is Iranian, the nationality of the female suspect has not been disclosed.
The Faslane base is one of the UK’s most sensitive military sites, serving as the home of its fleet of nuclear-armed submarines, including the Vanguard-class submarines, which carry Trident nuclear missiles.
These submarines form a key part of the UK’s nuclear deterrence strategy, with at least one vessel on continuous patrol at sea since 1969.
The base also hosts Astute-class submarines, which are nuclear-powered but equipped with conventional weaponry, while nearby facilities store the country’s nuclear warheads.
Any attempt to infiltrate such a critical installation is treated with utmost seriousness due to its strategic importance to national defence.
Authorities have yet to determine whether the incident is linked to espionage, activism, or other motives.
