IWD: Why Nigeria can’t ignore women in development – Journalist, Adaora Sydney-Jack

Journalist and gender activist, Adaora Sydney-Jack, has explained why Nigeria can not ignore the important role of women in its developmental pursuit as the world celebrates 2026 International Women’s Day.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sydney Jack said despite women’s efforts across the country, the female gender remains significantly underrepresented in elected offices and decision‑making positions.

She used the IWD 2026 as an opportunity to reiterate the call for more elected offices and positions for women in Nigeria.

According to her, the country needs to close the gender gap if it is serious about its developmental plight.

“International Women’s Day reminds us that equality is not a distant goal; it is an urgent mandate. Nigeria’s future depends on the active participation of women at every level of leadership and decision‑making. Together, we can close the gap, but only if we choose action over delay, inclusion over exclusion, and justice over inertia,” she stated.

DAILY POST reports that the world marked IWD on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
