The Kebbi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic boat accident in Yauri Local Government Area that claimed the lives of 14 people, mostly women, shortly after a wedding ceremony.

A breakdown of the casualties showed that 13 women and one child died in the mishap, while several others were rescued. All the deceased were buried the same day in accordance with Islamic rites.

Governor Nasir Idris, through a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, condoled with the families of the victims, the Yauri Emirate, and the local government council.

Represented at the funeral prayers by the Yauri Local Government Chairman, Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the affected families to accept the incident as the will of God.

“I appeal to you to accept this in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator,” Governor Idris said. “God does what He wants at the time He wants, and nobody has the right to question Him.”

He prayed for forgiveness for the deceased and for them to be granted Jannatul Firdaus, while calling for calm and resilience among the affected communities.

The victims were part of a group that had escorted a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village, Ngaski Local Government Area.

The boat conveying them back reportedly capsized mid-journey, highlighting the recurring risks of water transportation in riverine communities of Kebbi State.

The state government reiterated its sympathy with the people of Yauri and assured support to the families during this period of mourning, describing the incident as one of the deadliest boat mishaps in recent times.
