The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Reverend Matthew Kukah, on Monday, raised alarm over the scale of daily killings in Nigeria, describing the situation as unmatched anywhere else in the world.
Speaking in Yola, Adamawa State, at the launch of a book on Governor Ahmadu Fintiri titled The Man They Could Not Stop, authored by Solomon Kumangar, Kukah lamented the country’s divisions along religious lines, which he said were worsened by Western media narratives.
“What is happening in Nigeria cannot happen in Sudan, Cameroon, Niger, Ghana, or any other country in the world,” Kukah said.
“There is no other country in the world where 10 people are killed on Monday, 50 on Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, and the killings go on every week. How can such a country move forward?”
He added that only in Nigeria are deaths framed as Christian or Muslim casualties, accusing foreign media of fuelling religious divisions. Kukah urged political and religious leaders to strengthen institutions that unite Nigerians and foster peace.
The bishop also commended former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, for his intervention during the 2023 Adamawa governorship crisis.
At the event, former Senate President Bukola Saraki stressed the need to prioritise leaders with strong qualities over partisan affiliations, while Nassarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule encouraged Fintiri to join the APC.
Governor Fintiri, reflecting on the 2023 elections, described himself as a “man of destiny” and condemned what he called treachery and opportunism among political elites. He vowed that Adamawa people would continue to resist such forces.
The book launch was attended by governors from Bauchi and Nassarawa, the deputy governor of Oyo, and representatives from several northern states. APC Deputy National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, unveiled the book and urged residents to sustain support for Fintiri’s developmental projects.
