At least four suspected bandits from the gang that allegedly attacked Eruku, a community in Kwara State bordering Kogi, have been arrested by local vigilantes and hunters, DAILY POST reports.
A number of cattle rustled from the community’s monarch and Fulani herdsmen were also recovered during the search and rescue operation carried out by the vigilantes.
Hours after the attempted invasion by the armed bandits, the vigilantes pursued them into the bush.
DAILY POST recalls that in the early hours of Sunday, armed bandits invaded Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, but were reportedly resisted by vigilantes in a gun battle that lasted about 45 minutes.
Although the bandits set fire to the vigilantes’ operational van in front of Baba Gbadebo’s apartment in Okerepe, the vigilantes and hunters escaped unharmed and chased the attackers into the bush.
The community subsequently called for urgent intervention by the state government and for prompt security measures to be taken.
“This is insecurity waging war against Eruku,” a community source stated.
“If bandits can attempt to invade Eruku in broad daylight, cart away the Owa of Eruku’s cow, and also burn a vigilante’s patrol van, then who knows what might happen at midnight when residents would be sleeping?”
Reacting, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, in an interview with DAILY POST on Monday, confirmed the development.
She, however, said details were yet to reach her office, though some suspected bandits had been arrested and some rustled cattle recovered, but she could not give exact numbers.
