The Lagos State House of Assembly has received a petition from members of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, AUATON, Lagos Council, seeking urgent legislative intervention in the operations of ride-hailing companies within the state.

The petition was presented during a peaceful demonstration led by the union’s spokesperson, Azeez Jaiyesimi, who outlined the challenges confronting app-based drivers in Lagos.

In his address, Jaiyesimi highlighted worsening conditions in the sector, with particular emphasis on growing security threats.

He raised concerns over increasing attacks on drivers, some of which have reportedly resulted in fatalities, as well as cases of vehicle theft linked to criminal activities.

He also criticised what he described as inadequate support systems, including the absence of effective response and compensation mechanisms for victims, urging lawmakers to take decisive action.

The protesters further expressed dissatisfaction with previous engagements between drivers and ride-hailing companies, noting that such discussions have failed to produce binding or enforceable outcomes.

They called on the Assembly to strengthen regulatory oversight and ensure compliance across the sector.

Responding on behalf of the Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Hon. Temitope Adewale commended the drivers for maintaining a peaceful and orderly protest.

He explained that the petition would follow due legislative procedure, including referral to relevant committees for review before it is brought before the House for deliberation.

Adewale assured the petitioners that the Assembly would give the matter careful and objective consideration, while urging all stakeholders to remain calm, law-abiding, and patient as the process unfolds.

Other lawmakers present at the scene included Aro Moshood Abiodun and Apata Samuel, who also acknowledged the concerns raised by the demonstrators.

The Assembly reiterated its commitment to ensuring a fair resolution that addresses the challenges faced by app-based transport operators in the state.
