The Convener of the Coalition for Good Governance in Lagos, Nelson Ekujumi, has appealed to the Lagos State Government to sustain the ongoing removal of structures erected beneath high-tension power lines in Makoko, warning against any reversal of the exercise.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, Ekujumi said the clearance was a critical safety measure and called for the adoption of a holistic development blueprint for the waterfront community.
He explained that the intervention was aimed at safeguarding lives and property, noting that Makoko has for decades presented serious urban planning and environmental concerns.
According to him, the area is heavily congested, with many residents occupying makeshift wooden buildings constructed over the lagoon and lacking access to basic amenities such as sanitation, potable water, electricity and effective waste disposal systems.
Ekujumi argued that the persistent construction of homes beneath power transmission infrastructure, combined with frequent flooding and recurring fire incidents, underscores the need for decisive government action.
He stressed that protecting human lives must remain the foremost duty of any responsible administration.
While acknowledging that the demolitions have caused hardship and disrupted livelihoods, he cautioned against handling the issue purely on emotional grounds, warning that overlooking clear safety violations could result in catastrophic consequences.
He also called for greater openness, clearer communication and stronger trust between government agencies and community members in managing similar interventions going forward.
The coalition praised the Lagos State House of Assembly for stepping in to prevent a breakdown of order, but urged the legislature to ensure its committee acts swiftly. It further advocated a coordinated redevelopment strategy that extends beyond demolition to include decent housing, essential infrastructure and economic support for displaced residents.
According to the group, lasting urban renewal in Makoko must balance enforcement with structured planning that prioritises safety while protecting livelihoods.
The state government had commenced the demolition exercise after issuing notices to residents, citing failure to comply with agreed safety standards and maintaining that the action was necessary in the interest of public safety.
