Major streets in Abuja, the Nigerian capital city, have been shut down as the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, organised by the Sahara Reporters Publisher, Omoyele Sowore, to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, kicks off on Monday.

The protest which is coming exactly five years after the nationwide #ENDSARS protest, has seen major roads in the city taken over by hordes of security operatives to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Despite warnings by the Nigerian Police to the organisers to stop the rally, hundreds of protesters have been gathering in major areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with placards and demanding the unconditional release of Kanu.

However, in one of the videos shared on YouTube, some of the protesters were seen scampering for safety after some overzealous police officers fired teargas cannisters in a bid to scare away the protesters.
