Luis Suarez banned from football once again

Luis Suarez has been slammed with a six-match ban from football once again, but this time in the US Leagues Cup tournament.

Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez has been handed a six-match ban after spitting at a member of the Seattle Sounders’ backroom staff during chaotic scenes that followed his team’s defeat in the Leagues Cup final.

Seattle claimed a 3-0 victory before tempers flared at full-time. Suárez had to be restrained by teammates and was later caught on camera spitting toward an opposition staff member. The Leagues Cup disciplinary committee confirmed that the suspension will be enforced in next year’s competition, though Major League Soccer has left open the possibility of further sanctions.

The ill-tempered aftermath also involved other Miami players. Sergio Busquets received a two-game ban for striking Seattle’s Obed Vargas, while defender Tomás Avilés was suspended for three matches for violent conduct. On the opposing side, Sounders coach Steven Lenhart has been punished with a five-game ban.

Suárez, no stranger to controversy, has previously served long suspensions, including an eight-match ban in 2011 for racially abusing Patrice Evra, as well as multiple bans for biting opponents while playing for Ajax, Liverpool, and Uruguay — most infamously at the 2014 World Cup.

Following the latest incident, the 38-year-old issued an apology on Instagram, admitting his behaviour was unacceptable. His statement read, “It was a moment of much tension and frustration, where just after the game ended things happened that shouldn’t have happened but that doesn’t justify my reaction. I made a mistake and sincerely apologize. It’s not the image I want to give in front of my family, that suffers because of my mistakes, in front of my club, that also doesn’t deserve seeing themselves affected by something like this.”

Inter Miami also released a statement condemning the post-match altercations.
