Mahdi Shehu praises Tinubu for halting ADC promotion, urges withdrawal of new tax reform

Public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reportedly shelving the controversial promotion of his Aide-de-Camp (ADC).

He described the move as commendable and timely.

In a post shared on X on Wednesday, Shehu said the decision showed that the president could still listen to counsel, especially amid concerns that the promotion was unilateral and capable of causing disquiet within the military hierarchy.

“It has just been reported that Tinubu has shelved the unilateral promotion of his ADC. That is commendable. Even though it was reported that some retired Generals “CAUTIONED HIM” on the implications of his SUFFOCATING PROMOTION

However, Shehu urged President Tinubu to take a similar approach by halting the implementation of the new tax regime, which is expected to take effect from January 1, 2026.

According to him, Nigerians have endured one tax too many since Tinubu assumed office, without seeing any meaningful or measurable benefits.

“Shehu said Nigerians do not see any positive impact from the serial and painful taxes they are forced to pay.

“The only thing Nigerians can testify to about Tinubu’s taxes is the reckless spending and increase in the personal leisure and comfort of those within and around the corridors of power.” He wrote.

He criticised the tax reforms, describing them as unjust, destructive, inhuman, inconsiderate and undemocratic.

He warned that they amount to assault on families, individuals, businesses and national cohesion.

“It is still not too late, nor an act of cowardice, for Tinubu to consider withdrawing the tax law that will take effect from 1st January, 2026.,” he stated.

Shehu further warned that those encouraging the president to proceed with the tax reforms were misleading him and pushing him too far.

“Anybody pushing Tinubu to continue with the implementation of the said tax regime is a first-class enemy of Tinubu, Remi, Nigerians and Nigeria,” he said.

He also claimed that many Nigerians were already praying for divine intervention against what he described as an impending tax disaster.

“Whether he withdraws it or not, millions of Nigerians are praying for God’s intervention from the impending new tax disaster. Luckily, God does not turn away the prayers of His servants under deliberately imposed trauma.”
