A man simply identified as Sunny Uma Okwara has reportedly been given 30 strokes of the cane by women in Ohafia, Abia State, for allegedly assaulting his aged parents.
Okwara, who was also accused of beating his wife, was further fined N20,000 by the Nde Umuada, a traditional umbrella body of married women and daughters of the community.
According to a trending video of the incident, the alleged offender, said to be from Amaekpu in Ohafia, had reportedly developed the habit of physically assaulting his parents over minor disagreements. This prompted the elderly couple to petition the Umuada for investigation and judgment.
In the video, Sunny Uma Okwara was seen lying on the ground as members of the women’s group flogged him, while ordering him never to assault his parents or wife again, an instruction he agreed to obey.
The Umuada described his actions as a sacrilege that could not be tolerated in the community.
They added that the N20,000 fine imposed on him would be used to perform traditional cleansing rites at the village square, which they said had been desecrated by his actions.
