Meta acquires robotics startup ARI to advance humanoid AI push

2 hours ago 1

Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) as it deepens its investment in advanced AI systems capable of operating in the physical world.

The company said ARI specialises in developing robotic intelligence that allows machines to interpret, anticipate and respond to human behaviour in complex, dynamic settings. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Following the deal, ARI’s team — including co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto — will integrate into Meta’s AI division within its Superintelligence Labs research arm. The startup, which received early backing from AIX Ventures, had been focused on building foundation models to enable humanoid robots to perform a broad range of real-world tasks, including household and manual labour.

Wang, a former Nvidia researcher and professor at the University of California, San Diego, and Pinto, an ex-NYU academic and co-founder of Fauna Robotics, bring significant expertise in robotics and machine learning. Pinto’s previous venture was recently acquired by Amazon.

Meta said the addition of ARI’s team will enhance its work on robot control systems and self-learning capabilities, particularly in developing coordinated, full-body movement for humanoid robots.

The acquisition highlights Meta’s long-term ambitions in humanoid robotics, an area it has been quietly advancing. Internal documents previously revealed plans to develop consumer-oriented robots powered by in-house AI models and hardware.
