Middle East war: Trump chewing more than he can swallow, forgetting history – Mahdi Shehu

A public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has said the United States may not remain a dominant global power forever, warning that history shows that powerful empires eventually decline.

In a post shared on X on Saturday, Shehu argued that ruthless and over ambitious empires come and go.

He added that America may not be an exception.

According to him, the United States is currently on what he described as an expedition and voluntary voyage aimed at deciding what happens across the world, choosing enemies for decimation and friends to support.

He claimed that America aspires to station its military personnel and hardware anywhere it chooses, especially in areas linked to rare earth minerals, to ensure protection of its interests.

In doing so, Shehu said, “God doesn’t seem to matter to Trump.”

The commentator suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump may have ignored historical lessons about the rise and fall of great powers.

“For the records Trump should remember the Roman Empire,” Shehu wrote.

He referred to the Roman Republic and its later formations.

He noted that Rome was a dominant force for over 1,500 years but eventually collapsed due to internal instability, economic crisis and avoidable invasions.

He also mentioned other former powers such as the Soviet Union (USSR), the British, Spanish and Ottoman empires, saying their global influence weakened and eventually faded.

Shehu further claimed that as America continues to expand its influence in weaker nations, other global powers are pursuing their own interests.

He described Russia as playing hide and seek by selling weapons commercially but not protecting weaker partners.

He accused China of mining rare earth minerals in weaker countries and granting infrastructure loans on unfavourable terms without committing to their protection.

He also alleged that Britain has chosen to remain a safe haven for other people’s money.

On the Middle East, Shehu said Arab countries are granting multi-trillion dollar defence contracts to America out of fear, while Israel is beating war drums because it is heavily armed.

He also claimed that African leaders are being handpicked for blackmail and intimidation.

He noted that Africa holds about 70 percent of the world’s natural and rare earth mineral deposits.

Concluding his post, Shehu said it is unlikely that what he called the American Empire will last like former empires.

He argued that Trump is chewing more than he can swallow and ignoring the lessons of history.
