A mother and her son narrowly escaped death on Wednesday morning after a Lexus SUV somersaulted several times at the NYSC bus stop along LASU-Isheri Expressway in Lagos.
The accident, which was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, was described as a lone but serious crash.
It was revealed that the Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT was moving from Isheri to Igando when the driver suddenly lost control. The vehicle overturned three times before finally stopping between early morning traffic on the busy road.
The victims, a mother, and her son were quickly carried out of the badly damaged vehicle with visible bruises and mild injuries.
LASTMA officials who were within the area quickly carried out a coordinated rescue. They helped prevent what could have been a fatal accident.
The Nigeria Police Force from Igando Division was also present to control the crowd and secure the scene during the rescue operation.
The family of the victims later arrived and took the mother and son for proper medical care.
To prevent another accident and ease traffic flow within the accident area, LASTMA officials worked with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, to clear the damaged vehicle from the road before being handed over to the police for further investigation.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said he was relieved that no life was lost.
He wished the victims quick recovery, warned motorists to avoid overspeeding, and to check their vehicles regularly, especially important safety parts like brakes before travelling.
He said overspeeding, and poor vehicle maintainance often lead to serious accidents on major roads.
“Excessive speed when compounded by mechanical deficiencies constitutes a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies on major expressways.” Bakare-Oki said.
