The Assistant Controller General Narcotics, Zone 12, Owerri, Imo State, covering Imo, Abia, and Anambra States commands of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, has appealed to Governor Alex Otti to move the NDLEA Command headquarters from Aba to Umuahia.
Mrs Ezeonye said that doing that would bring the drug law enforcers close to the seat of power and further strengthen their operations.
The Assistant Controller General, who led some zonal officers and Abia State Commander of NDLEA to meet the Governor, said that the Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa was appreciative of the residential accommodation in Umuahia and vehicles donated for NDLEA’S operations.
She also thanked the Governor for the vehicles and rehabilitation of the centre he provided for NDLEA, saying that the drug law enforcers had no excuse to fail in their duties, even as she applauded his achievements in infrastructure.
Responding, Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s determination to sustain the war against drug trafficking and abuse, noting that a lot of young people go into crime and use drug consumption to fuel it.
“If you notice, you find that a lot of the young people go into crime, now come back to consume drugs to fuel it,” the Governor stated.
He maintained that strict laws and not rehabilitation was the best way to control drug trafficking, abuse and related crimes.
He further explained that those who engage in involuntary crimes were responsible for 20% of the crimes committed in society today, while those involved in voluntary crime make up the rest 80% and were involved in crimes as a last resort for survival.
Otti promised to look into the request of the NDLEA that their State Command headquarters be moved to Umuahia.
