Mutfwang: I’ve been pressured to join APC, but my loyalty remains with PDP

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has disclosed that he has faced mounting pressure to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) but maintained that he remains loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that only God and the people of Plateau can decide his political future.

Speaking at a dinner in honour of newly elected and outgoing PDP executives from the 17 local government areas of the state, held at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos, Mutfwang said he had made his stance clear to those attempting to lure him to the ruling party.

“It is true that they have been putting pressure on me, but I told them that only two people will authorise me to change my party — one is the God of heaven, and the second is you people seated here,” Mutfwang stated. The audience immediately chorused “No” when he jokingly asked if he should consider joining the APC.

The governor dismissed reports suggesting that some APC leaders had rejected overtures to bring him into their fold, describing such claims as baseless and motivated by fear.

“Those rejecting me for what I did not look for are engaging in a useless exercise. The truth is that 60 to 70 percent of APC members in Plateau would gladly have us in their party; they are only biting their fingers,” he said.

Mutfwang explained that the meeting was convened to celebrate the efforts of the outgoing PDP executives, whose sacrifices, he said, were instrumental in returning the party to power in Plateau State. He also congratulated the newly inaugurated State Executive Committee led by Chief Raymond Dabo, expressing confidence that the new leadership would deepen the party’s grassroots structures and consolidate its strength ahead of the 2027 elections.

He commended aspirants such as Gregory Yenlong and Davou Mang, who withdrew during the last congress to promote peace and unity within the party. The governor further directed PDP chairmen across the 17 local governments to replicate similar engagement meetings to reinforce the party’s presence across the state.

In his remarks, former Governor Jonah Jang lauded Mutfwang’s administration, describing his leadership as “transformative and unifying,” and expressed optimism that the PDP would secure another electoral victory in 2027.

Also speaking, former Minister of Youth and Sports, Damishi Sango, congratulated the new PDP executive and pledged unwavering support for the governor’s administration. Immediate past PDP Chairman, Chris Hassan, echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence that Plateau citizens would once again rally behind the PDP in the next general elections.
